Graduate Automotive Technology Education Center
Advanced Energy Storage Center

Program Overview

The objective of the Penn State GATE Center is to help build a workforce of highly-trained automotive engineers to advance energy storage technologies for clean, ultra fuel-efficient vehicles.

Organization of the GATE Center

To achieve this goal, the GATE Center coordinates laboratory and training resources in the three areas of in-vehicle, high-power energy storage; batteries, flywheels, and ultra-capacitors. Penn State has both breadth and depth in educating undergraduate and graduate students in all three of these areas. The GATE Center provides focus and organization to these educational activities into a unified and clearly identifiable thrust area. This thrust area integrates key elements of different technologies in a complementary manner, providing students with both the tools and the experience necessary to support industry in developing highly-efficient and cost-effective, in-vehicle, high-power energy storage components and strategies.
