The Tests
Before actual testing begins, each bus undergoes a detailed check-in procedure. Seven tests are then performed
on the buses:
safety,
structural integrity and durability,
reliability,
performance,
maintainability,
noise,
fuel economy.
These are not pass-or-fail tests; the data from all the tests are compiled into a test report that is made available to
the manufacturer to provide information during the procurement process. As a result of the Intermodal Surface Transportation
Efficiency Act (ISTEA), an expansion of testing will add two new tests to the currently operational test areas:
brake testing
and
emissions testing.
